Personification

Personification is when a writer gives human characteristics to inanimate objects or animals.  One example from the story includes:

"seagulls soared and cried out as if they were in mourning."

  2. On page 41, Ellen says it seemed as if the whole world was crying when Lise died. I think that is a personification because she says the world is crying, and that is a thing that people do, not worlds.
