  1. Earlier in the story it said that Lise was engaged to Peter. Peter sure seems like a member of the Danish Resistance. Do you think Lise knew he was a resistance fighter?

    1. No, because she would have told her family she was.

    2. The book never mentioned any proof, but I believe she didn't, and when he had to do something, he would say," Oh, I just want to hang out with the boys (best friends), i'll be back as soon as possible!

    3. I do think he told Lise. If you are engaged to someone you would probably tell them that once you were sure you could trust them. It would be a very important key of marriage because Peter wouldn't want to put Lise in danger without her knowing.

    4. I do not think Lise knew he was a resistance fighter because then she would tell her family, naturally causing them to tell other people. So therefor, Peter wouldn't tell Lise because he would be afraid that his cover would be blown.

    5. I think Lise didn't know because if she did she might tell someone.

    6. I do not think Lise knew about it. I assumed that Peter joined the Danish Resistance after Lise died.

    7. I think Lise would have known because the Rosens are Jews and she would want to help. If she would not have known the author would have said more about Peter.

    8. I don't think that Lise knew about Peter's Danish resisting. I think he was trying to keep her safe, so he didn't tell the truth. Now, as this may seem strange, I can relate this to "Spider-Man" and his relatives. He never tells them who he truly is, and keeps them out of his second life, so they don't get involved in the dangerous things he does. Just like Peter may have done with Lise to keep her safe.

    9. I think he would have kept it a secret. As we've heard in many books you can't trust anyone.

    10. NO!!!! She would have told her family if she thought; I think...

  2. I think that Lise would have known about the resistance fighter because they are engaged.

  3. If I were about to get married, I'd tell my fiance that. It's a HUGE detail. I'd actually tell them as soon as I can trust them.

    1. What if they got married, he told her finally, then they got divorced? Do you think Lise would do that?

    2. I think that Peter may have told Lise but I am not sure if he did because it did not mention Lise telling Annemarie or the rest of her family.

  4. The next chapter says, "My Dogs Smell Meat!" I don't remember Annemarie putting meat in the picnic basket. Why would the German dogs smell meat?

    ReplyDelete

    1. The packet might give off a smell that attracts the German dogs since their is no meat in Annemarie's basket.

      Delete
    2. They smell meat, because the person standing in front of them is live meat. I believe that they're trying to intimidate Annemarie, to make her nervous, and tell the truth.

    3. The dogs could be smelling a person or the dogs picked up the smell of whatever is in the package.

      Delete
    4. the packet might have meat in it or the dog smells Annemrie because she has meat on her body.

      Delete
    5. maybe there was some sort of meat in the packet

      Delete
    6. I think it's a metaphor for something important or plentiful to the cause. Since the package is very important,or it is very plentiful to the cause of Hendrik.

    7. I think that by "My Dogs Smell Meat" the soldiers meant my dogs smell something suspicious in your basket or my dogs smell something different then the bread the apple and the cheese.

      Delete
    8. The scent may have been from the boat. Maybe Peter gave the escaping Jews meat so that they could eat on they voyage to Sweden. It may have given off scent so the dogs could smell it from where they were.

  5. Do you think the Free Danes Newspaper is written by Danes or misleading articles written by Nazis?

    1. Great question. I think if the Nazis were able to get hold of the publisher of the newspaper, they would probably take advantage of that situation.

      Delete
    2. I think that the danes wrote it because what nazi had time to write a newspaper about the danes when there real enemy was the Jewish.

  6. If the solider saw the star print on Annemaries hand what do you think would have happened to Annemarie.( Awhile ago)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No doubt, Annemarie would've been hauled away and possibly never heard from again. That was the unfortunate consequence of such a thing.

  7. Mrs. Johanson says that Uncle Hendrick needs a wife. If he does get married during the war do you think he will tell her that he transports the Jews and is helping them escape?

    1. Great question, Mackenzie! Tough call on this one. To protect himself and possibly his family, he might keep it a secret for a VERY LONG time.

      Delete
    2. I think that Uncle Hendrick will tell Mrs. Johansen because she is not a Nazi so why not.Uncle Hendrick will tell Mrs.Johansen in my opinion.

    3. I think he would have to tell his wife if he had one because if he kept a secret from her for a long time this big she could divorce him or turn him in.
      P.S. Great Question!

  8. Which Nazi soilders where the ones at the end of the 2nd chapter.

  9. I wonder if the packet is no more then a childhood memory?

    1. Whatever it is, it must be really important to the safety of the Rosens and others.

  10. We also thought Peter was a Nazi, do you think he would have told Lise or do you think he would keep it a secret?

  11. Kirsti told the soldiers that it was Ellen's new year. Could it be the same soldier remembering that Annemarie has a Jewish friend?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Max, Kirsti never actually said that. Annemarie was terrified that Kirst would blurt something out like that on the train, but she never actually did.

  12. Do you think Peter is a Nazi? Why do you think so, and what proof do you have?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe he was being sneaky stealth. And just going without being seen.

      Delete
  13. If Kirsti were to tell the German Soldier that Ellen had her New Year-instead of telling him about Uncle Henrik-what do you think might have happened? If the German Soldier might have chosen to take Ellen away, what may have Annemarie's action be? What may have Inge's action be?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Inge would probably cover for kirsti and say something like," She's just a little girl. She's just confused with of these Jew stuff. we're really going to see my brother Henrik."

      Delete
    2. Maybe, but what if the soldier knew that Annemarie was lying because it is obvious to tell when someones lying.Right?

  14. Why did Mr.Johansen have to stay home and go withe Mrs.Johansen and the girls.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. because it would be more suspicious with the whole family together.

    2. If Mr. Johansen went it would be very suspicious.

  15. How much trouble do you think Henrik and the others would have got'n in to if the Nazi soldiers found them smugling jews?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think they would be shot and put in jail. Or worse they could be killed.

      Delete
    2. they would probably hurt them and band them from something

  16. Why did Annemarie hide Ellen's necklace?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ellen's necklace has a Star Of David on it. The Star Of David is a symbol that Jews use for their religion. The Nazis dislike Jews very much, so if they even suspected that Ellen was a Jew, they'd take her away.

      Delete
    2. Ellen's neclace has the star of david on it. The star of david is a sighn for the Jewish people. The Nazi's do not like the Jew's at all, so she hid it. If she didn't hide it and it was o her neck she might get hurt or even getting killed.

  17. I am confused about Lise's car crash. It just seems to me like such an important character in the story would be killed off by some random person. Who do you think might have caused the car crash?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it may have been a careless driver that caused the crash.
