Joseph 1861 - A Rumble of War

On page 139, Clay told Joseph how he's been working for Dr. Mercer.  He informed Joseph that there have been a lot of fights in town, which has provided Dr. Mercer with quite a bit of work.  On one occasion, Dr. Mercer let Clay sew up a head wound.  Then Clay told Joseph that the wound occurred when two brothers were fighting each other over which side they would join - The Union or the Confederates.

Explain how the underlined phrase above might serve as a metaphor of the American Civil War.  Use evidence from the book to support your idea.

  5. In Joseph it said that the north and south were once friends. They may have been so close as to say they were like brothers. If the north and south are fight, its like brothers/friends fight too.

  7. The brothers fighting each other is like the south separating from the rest of the country. The country used to be a full country before the Civil War like the brothers might have played together before joining the war.

  8. I think what Mr.Wilhelmy means by two brothers fighting each other means that the North and south are both part of the union and are fighting against each other. A great example is Branson Mills in the book Joseph, Branson Mills is a great example because Kentucky is a neutral state so people ar tuning on each other.

  10. The metaphor two brothers were fighting each other might been used in the civil war because... The metaphor is like the unions and the confederates fighting each other known as the civil war.I also think that Joseph and Clay would join the union because when the confederates were trying to take down the flag Joseph felt sad.But then the unions had ambushed the confederates. And the American flag isn't just a piece of cloth it's a symbol of the United States Of America.

  12. I think that the two brothers fighting each other is an sign of war. The two brothers fighting was an example of the North and the South fighting. In Branson Mills, maybe one of them wanted to join the South and the other one wanted to join the North.

  15. Its a metaphor because the country is fighting against itself. The south was angry with the north and tension began to build to the point were shots were fired and conflict began. War had begun.

  17. The statement could be used as a medaphor if someone ment two brothers as the North and South fighting against each other. They could be fighting over if slavery was a good thing or a bad thing. If Joseph was on a side i think he would be fighting on the side that belives slavery is a bad thing.

In war people were fighting on both sides trying to win the war against each other. And in the story both boys got into a fight trying to win so they could win the argument and go on one side of the war. Then one ended up hurt because they were fighting so mutch. That is the same many people got hurt because they fought so mutch.

  21. I think the underlined phrase may have been used as a metaphor because the southern and northern states were both part of the United States kind of like a family but then they broke off of each other and got into a big argument. That is kind of in a way how the Civil War started if you think about it.

  22. In the book Joseph Joseph said that North and South were once friends. They were so good friend's that they helped each other until the war started. I think one of the brother's wanted to join South and the other brother Want's to join the South. The war started when The flag got lowered. Then Joseph was sad about the flag because of the war.

  24. I think the brothers are starting a sign of war. The brothers are fighting like in the Civil War ballad. But in Branson Mills, maybe one wants to join North and the other one the South.

  25. i think its just like the civil war because america is like a family and it splits up and starts fighting itself. Kind of like the civil war ballad too

  26. I think the two brothers would be the Confederacy would be one brother and the Union would be the other. One agrees with slavery and the other doesn't.

  27. Joseph said that just months before everybody there was friends or family. I think the brothers were fighting because of a disagreement. Maybe one wanted to join the North because he was against slavery and the other wanted slavery and wanted to join the South. They were probably fighting over which side will win.

  29. Even if brothers join different sides of the war the north and the south. They are starting sign of war in Branson Mills which is not a good thing for the city.

  30. I feel that the brothers have a personification of the south and the north. They have a disagreement and could be explained in a metaphor like "Brother against brother is civil war".

  31. This means the two brothers{armies}were together but they had a fight and had seperated each other and they are apart. The Confederate states and the Union states were together as one country but then they were apart.

  32. It is like 2 very close friends raging war between each other.

  33. It was a sign of war and a sign of disagreement between two sides whether it be brothers, countries families or friends.

  34. One brother could be on the north and one could be on the south. They could be heartbroken because they are in the same family.

  35. also many people had families who did split up so it is very literal too

  36. He was saying that the brothers were disagreeing about the sides of the war. The south and the north were fighting about slavery. They were family members then split apart by the sides, south wanting slavery, north not wanting slavery. They both ended up getting wounded from weapons and feeling hurt in the heart from fighting. Clay said that the brothers said they were wounded, meaning probably feelings and getting cut.

  37. The 2 brothers went to different sides of the war and were fighting in what they thought was right. They might have been close when they were younger but it did not matter now that they are at war

    ReplyDelete
  38. Since the North and South are both parts of America it is like two brothers fighting. The people dying on both sides represent the head wound. Although the sentence is not literal now, it can be a real fight between brothers.

    ReplyDelete
  39. They both had a strong opinion about which side was the enemy and what side was their ally. It led to violence that caused fights for families. It was a hard time because of what war did to some families.

  40. The brothers are arguing just like the South and North. They were probably fighting on which side will win. Like Carter said "Brother against brother is Civil War

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree with Coco, and one brother might be Confederacy while the other was Union. They also could have been the violent type of fighting with pistols and guns, or it could have just been some punching.

  42. It reminds me of some mornings in my house when me and my brother fight it can last for weeks

  43. I think it is a symbol of how the North and the South used to be together, and how they are now against each other. Like how two brothers could once be together, and are now against each other.

  45. In Joseph, it was saying that the north and south were once friends. They might have been very close like brothers or friends. If the north and the south will fight, it'll be like the brothers and friends fighting.

  46. If the phrase in the book "Joseph" were to be used as a metaphor, it may have meant that the Confederates-South-and the Union-North-were once The United States of America-like two brothers. But then the two brothers-North and South-began to fight. They both fought against the other brother-or side-so that the other brother-or side-would join their side of the fight-or conflict.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The two brothers were fighting against each other. I think that means it is about the Southern and the Northern fighting against each other. The brothers part of it means that Southern and the Northern are like brothers because they make a family/country

    ReplyDelete
  48. Civil Wars are very ugly, because that other "bad" guy who lives down in the South also happens to be someone that you know. You are fighting your friends.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It might mean that North and the South may have once been in peace. But later started fighting. So it means when you fight over a disagreement with a friend or sibling, you are most likely to be on the other side. That is how the countries were. They were both fighting over a disagreement. The North wanted Slaves to be free the south wanted to keep and sell Slaves.

  51. This phrase can serve as a metaphor for the Civil War because two brothers fighting is like the North and South fighting in America. The North and South represent the two brothers, once united in one nation or in the brothers' case, family. In "Joseph", Mr.Byers said that families that were once united, were torn apart because of the idea of slavery.
