Read the following passage from the book.
The Confederate captain raised his hand and shouted, "Take her down, boys!"
Joseph swallowed hard. He was not sure why he felt so sad. The flag was only a piece of cloth, he tried to tell himself. Yet it was all he could do to keep from rushing out and begging the soldiers not to destroy it.
Why do you think Joseph if feeling sad about the flag being taken down? Is the flag just a piece of cloth? Or is it something more? Please explain clearly.
Yes, it just a piece of cloth. But it has much more meaning to it. If someone destroys it, it's like destroying the country. It means liberty and freedom. He's probably sad because it's a symbol of America, it's way more than just a piece of cloth!

ReplyDeleteThe flag is not just a piece of cloth. Joseph is beginning to agree with the north he thinks slavery is wrong. The flag was the northern flag. The flag symbolizes that slavery is wrong and everyone should be free. Taking down the flag is like taking down Joseph's belief.

ReplyDeleteI think Joseph feels sad about the flag being token down because the flag basically unites the county. If I were Joseph and I saw my country's flag being token down I would feel very sad. I don't think the flag is just a piece of cloth because again it unites the country, and if I saw part of my country fighting the other that would make me feel sad and worried.

Also maybie the country he lives in has no more representation. The flag might make Joseph feel free tearing it down could make him feel like he is not free.
