Number the Stars (Chapters 11-12)

1. Do you agree or disagree with what Peter did to Rachel on pages 89 and 90?  Please explain your point of view clearly.

2.  What text to text comparison came to mind after reading chapters 11-12?

56 comments:

  1. I agree with Peter because if she woke up she would signal the germans that they were running away. The germans could hurt them very badly if they were caught.

The text comparison I see is that Annemarie was all alone. She saw Kirsti sitting in her mamas bed with the thunder storm kitten. She then saw her mom laying there on the ground.

    1. The book I compare to this book is the Butterfly because monique didn't know really what was happening because Nazis took over that country and it was very frightening.

  2. 1.) My brain says it was the right thing to do. (or at least it was the smart thing to do) But my heart says no it wasn't a good idea. ( Rachel may never wake up from it) But overall, I do think it was the right thing.

2.) I thought of Joseph. When Joseph was helping Lilly and Merium (the two escaped slaves girls) Mrs. Byers gave the two girls big winter coats, hats, and gloves. Both the slaves and the Jews need protective clothing to help them survive.

  3. 1 I agree with Peter because if the baby did wake up at some point she could start crying. I do understand why the parents were nervous about Rachel because if Peter gives her to much of that medicine she might not be able to wake up. 2 I thought of Joseph when I read those chapters because the bounty hunters tried to put Hellen to sleep with medicine just like peter did to Rachel. But Peter gave Rachel the medicine in a calm way and the bounty hunter is Joseph didn't.

  4. 1: I disagree since the baby was born probably a few weeks ago it could be dangerous for it to a sleeping liquid because of whats in it. 2: Chapters 11-12 were like in Joseph when he and Zachary took Lily and Marian to the cave to help them escape.

  7. 1. I'm in between because they needed it to be quiet but he was giving the baby a drug.

    2. I thought of The Butterfly because they were helping Jews escape in The Butterfly and Number the Stars.

  8. 1. I disagree and I agree with what peter did, i agree because the baby could of cried and get caught and, also I disagree because the baby was taking a drug and could never wake up.
    2. It reminds me of Joseph because when they were saving Hannah the free slave bails gave her stuff to fall asleep.

  9. 1) First of all what Peter did was he put a liquid that would make Rachel fall asleep the whole time. I think what he did was necessary because if Rachel started crying in the middle of the trip a soldier could hear her and the soldier will figure out that they are bringing Jews to Sweden.

    2) I compared this to Joseph because when he was bringing Lily and Mariam to his cave his mother gave worm clothes to the girls which shows that she really cares about them just like in Number the Stars where Peter gives coats to everyone.

  10. I think Peter did the right thing but also did the wrong thing giving the drug to the baby. I think it was the right thing because the baby would not cry so they won't get caught. The bad part is that it was a drug.

Chapters 11-12 were almost like Joseph. When Joseph gave the winter coats and food to Lily and Mariam and took them to the cave. Then in Number the Stars when Peter gives the people the food, blankets, and winter coats then takes them to the boat.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1) I agree with Peter because if the baby awoke and started to cry the German soldiers would hear and everyone could be caught.

    2) Chapters 11-12 remind me of Joseph. In Joseph he has to help the african american girls to Canada. In number the stars the jews have to be helped to Sweden.

  12. 1. I don't agree with what Peter did, but it was a nessasary precaution. The mother said that Rachel slept all night, but they couldn't risk her waking up and starting to cry, or they might be herd.
    2. It reminded me when Scroggins and Bails put Hannah to sleep when they were trying to capture her.

  14. 1. I can not decide if I agree or disagree with what Peter is doing to the baby by giving him the drug. One of the reasons I possibly could agree with Peter giving the baby the drug is if the baby wakes up and starts to cry everyone could get caught and possibly sent to a concentration camp or killed. One of the reasons I could disagree with Peter is if he gives the baby to much of the medicine the baby might not be able to wake up again or might stay asleep for longer than he should.

    2. I made a text to text comparison to The Butterfly. The way that I can connect to The Butterfly is Monique was separated from her mother at the train station and Annemarie's mom was out and they were both worried that they would never see their mom again and that something happened to them.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1. I think it is the right thing to do. I also think it is not a good thing to do. Rachel may actually not wake back up ever again. She still has a chance to wake back up though. Over all I think it is the right thing to do. I hope she wakes up but does not cry when she wakes up. But I think peter does not want the baby to wake up because if the baby cries when she wakes up the Nazi's could hear her crying

    2. I thought of Joseph, I thought of Joseph because Josephs mom was giving coats, hats, and gloves to Marium and Lilly because it was cold outside. It also reminds me of Joseph because Joseph was trying to take Lilly and Marium to the underground railroad. He took them to the cave at night just like there trying to take the family to the boat at night.

  17. 1. From my point of view I disagree what Peter did to Rachel. I think this way because Rachel could've slept for a really long time or she could have also woken up and started crying. If the Nazi soldiers heard Rachel crying they could have knocked on the door and could have caught the people in the Johansen's apartment and could've been caught trying to bring Ellen and the Rosens to Sweden.

    2. One text to text I thought of when reading chapters 11-12 was Joseph. I thought of this because when Peter was going to take Ellen and the Rosens Family to Sweden it reminded me of Joseph taking the two slaves Mariam and Lilly to the cave that Joseph had discovered.

  19. 1. Yes, because if they were running, the baby could get woken up and cry then the Nazis can find them.

    2. That they're trying to escape the Nazis like in the butterfly.

  21. 1. I disagree what if the baby doesn't wakes up. The baby was just born and probably could get sick.

2.I thought about Joseph when he help Lily and Marian escape from the slave catcher's and when the slave catcher's caught Hannah they tried to give her the sleeping medicine.

  22. 1:I agrre with peter if the baby wakes up then she will definatly cry.And then if the Nazi find them on the lake or on the path. They will surly do somthing horrible to them.Another reason I think peters idea is better also because peter is also also agree because peter is trustworthy and always doing what is right. That is why giving the baby sleeping drops is fine.2:This reminds me of two books the first one is joseph when it is late at night they have a family meeting right after they have been interagated by bad men who are in charge. Then they help some eskaped slaves get in a safe location but they are pay the price by bieng intteragatead. This also reminds me ofthe book Desperaux. Its because desperaux does the thing he feels is right and he does it.But afterone of his excersions he has to pay the price by going to the dungon when he is found out And he also end's up being spraled on the ground two those are the ones I connect it to.

I also are thinking of the butterfly because Monique tried to hide slaves in there basement at night so the Nazi's couldn't find the slaves. The slaves also said it was dark in the cellar just like Joseph taking Marium and Lilly to the cave and Peter taking them to the boat at night. In passage to freedom the people were trying to be free but the dad wasn't sure if he could keep all these people safe or keep his family safe and he chose what god wanted them to do which is helping the slaves just like in the butterfly Monique helping his family be safe or helping all these slaves. She chose what god wanted to do. Just like all of the other stories.

I agree that Peter did the right thing by giving the sleeping medicine to Rachel. If he didnt give Rachel the meds they could all be killed by the Nazi if the baby was caught crying.

2)the book that reminded me of chapters 11-12 is the book about Sugihara evrey single person crourded at his gate.In Number the Stars evry jewish refugee gthered at Henrics house for help.

  27. 1) I would have done the same thing. There's no way i'm getting caught and being put in a concentration camp because a baby cried.
2)Henrik is like Joseph, and they're both getting people who would be hurt to free places.

  28. 1. I disagree and agree with what Peter did. I agree because they couldn't take the chance of the baby waking up and crying. That could put them all in danger. I disagree because the liquid is very dangerous for babies.
    2. In the book All Four Stars Gabsty couldn't take the risk of being caught by her parents. I think it is not right for her to go behind her parents back and secretly do things.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1. I am very torn between both answers. It could mean saving the others life but losing hers.

    2. When they open open the casket and there is blankets and jackets inside, it reminds me when Mrs. Byers give Marium and Lily jackets and blankets.

  30. 1.) Peter gave Rachel laudanum to keep the baby sleeping. I disagree with this because laudanum has I high chance to kill the baby.

2.) When the Jews are being taken to Sweden this reminds me of when Marium is being taken to a safe house in Joseph.

    ReplyDelete
  31. (1) I think it was quite a risk to apply laudanum to the infant at that age. I know they couldn't take risks, but that was TO dangerous.
    (2) This reminds of the Transit to Freedom- The Sugihara story video in which one of the Jewish refugees recalls being a young boy when he took a boat to Sweden.

2.Joseph helped the two slaves get away,Annemarie is helping Jews get away.

  33. 1.I think it is wrong and kinda right to give a baby sleeping medicine. That is because it could be alcoholic or it could cause death to the baby (Rachel) But it could maybe keep the baby quiet.

2.When Rachel drinks the medicine,it reminds me of the book Warriors. The medicine cat gives poppy seeds and they get really sleepy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. No I do not agree with this because of 1 reason. Who would hear them when they are on the boat and babies usually sleep in to 9 A.M. So no I don't agree with this.
Chapter 11 me reminds me of when Joseph gets Lilly and Mariem to freedom actually freeing them.

  35. 1) I disagree with what Peter did because laudanum is very dangerous to take as an adult. It's even more dangerous when you give it to a baby. The laudanum could kill Rachel.

    2) A text to text comparison that I found is when in Harry Potter, after everybody leads Harry to Tonks house. Since it was pouring rain, Tonks's mom gave everybody blankets to warm up. This is just like when Mrs. Johansen opens the casket and gives everybody coats and blankets for their journey.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1. Peter shouldn't have done it. Doing that is dangerous, and she might have gotten a disease from it, or something very bad. These is also another clue that Peter might be doing something hurtful because he might be a Nazi!

    2. This reminds me of ' The Butterfly' because they took as much warmth as they could get, and went outside as soon as possible. They only difference in that part is that the neighbor in The Butterfly saw them. There might have been someone spying on Annemarie and everyone else, bbut they didn't realize it.

  37. 1 I think it was worth it even though the Racheal could die. It was either a chance of one person dying or everyone dying.
2 I think this is like Joseph when they give Hannah laugnum.

  38. 1.I agree and disagree. I agree with what Peter did because Rachel could have gotten the attention of someone and blown their cover. However I disagree because it could kill her because it is very dangerous for a baby to take that at such a young age.
    2. Chapters 11-12 reminded me of a lot of things. It reminded me of "Passage to Freedom" because everyone was relying on Sugihara to write them Visa's. Like how all those Jews were relying on Uncle Henrik to take them to Sweden. It also reminded me of Joseph 1861 and the Underground Railroad. Everyone had to work together to get the slaves up North. Just like how everyone had to work together to save the Jews.

  39. 1.I think that he should have not given the baby the medicine because it was really dangerous and the baby could've died.
2.At the end of chapter 12 it said that Annemarie saw her mother lying on the earth (dead) and it reminds me of the story The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane because Annemarie's mother had lost her life and Abilene lost Edward. Tulane.

  40. 1.) Peter Neilson gave Rachael sleeping medicine even though Rachaels mom,the baby was crying, and he got a full nights sleep every day. ( I was talking about laudanum for the sleeping medicine)Peter had a high chance of hurting the baby.
2.) The book I am comparing to Number the Stars chapters 11-12 is a book called Joseph 1861 Rumble of a War and a am comparing when Joseph had to take Lily and Marium to the North for freedom and when Uncle Hendrick was taking ellen on a boat to Sweden to escape Naziś and Nazi soliders.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1.) I agree, because if Peter was going to take them to Sweden, which he was, the baby crying may make Nazis come to them and find them out. They couldn't take the risk, so they had to give the baby sleeping medicine, but not a lot because it could be been dangerous to give a baby too much sleeping medicine when she is young.

2.) It reminded me of Joseph's Choice-1861 when Joseph and his mother tried to rescue his step-father from the Vengeance Committee. In this book, Mama, Peter and Uncle Henrik come and meet to help the Rosens escape from the Germans.

    1. I also think it was like the Butterfly because of the same reason-people came together to help Jews escape from the Nazis.

  42. 1) I disagree with Peter because it is very unhealthy for the baby. The baby could of gotten very hurt or even worse.
2)Joseph didn't know what was going on and he felt like his family was lying to him. Also Joseph saved more than 1 run away slave. He tried his best like Annemarie is doing.

  44. 1.I think it is way to dangrous I would rather be left with Nazi on my every move then a baby at risk

2.this book and Joseph are just like each and other Joseph sends the slaves to freedome and there sending the Jews to Sweden.

  45. 1. The baby did need to take the medicine because Peter didn't want to take a risk of making noise to attract people or the Nazi's.

2.In chapters 11 and 12 it reminded me of Passage to Freedom because they are both helping someone or some people escape.

  46. 1. Even though it was dangerous I still think it was good that Peter gave Rachel the laudanum because they couldn't take the chance of getting caught.
    2. It reminds of Joseph when they use the coffin as a distraction the same way that Mr.Byers looked suspicious when he went to the Bakers house.
