Number the Stars (Chapter 7)

What example of foreshadowing does the author use in chapter 7?  Describe the scene and tell us what the author is trying to tell us about the future of the story.

  1. I think the Star of David imprint on Annemarie's hand is a hint. (a hint that something that involves the Nazis or Jews) I also think when Mama says "is the weather good for fishing" for the second time is also a hint. It has to be secret code for something. I think it's secret code for they are taking Ellen somewhere new.

  2. Annemarie could tell that they were leaving because they moved the furniture and got the boat ready. The sun is shining, the cold water is making gentle waves and the boat is ready to go. The author is trying to tell us they are leaving on boat to go to Sweden

  3. I think that in chapter 7 it says about the great aunt birte but I think they are lying and making a distraction or excuse for going somewhere. They might have something to do with getting or maybe finding Ellen parents and maybe suprising her with her parents. Also they could set up the Jew celebration for her but I know 1 of those 2 details will sometime in chapter 9 or 10.

  5. I think one good hints of foreshadowing is about the Star of David. It just gave me that felling that it would play a big role in the story. Also another good one is when he says "is the weather good for fishing?". I think that actually means "is it a good time to take Ellen".

  6. I think they are moving somewhere new because they moved the furniture ,got the boat ready and Annemarie´s mom said ¨is the weather good for fishing¨ for a second time.

  7. I think the saying "is the wheather good for fishing?" might be a code for getting on a boat and staying on the boat for a while to get away from the place where everyone can find them (land) and get on the water where no one is, because barely anyone can afford a boat.

  8. I think the author used forshadowing when Annmarie's dad called uncle Henrik and asked "is the weather good for fishing". then later in the story Annmarie's mom asked uncle Henrik if the weather is right so maybie the author is giving us clues on what they are really talking about or trying to tell us that they are speeking in code.

  12. I think that the Star of David that imprinted onto Annemarie's hand will be a hint later in the book. The Star Of David will be a hint later in the book I think because it represents the Jews. I also think that when Mr.Johansen said is the weather good for fishing I think it's going to be a secret code later in the book. I think that hint is going to be used later in the story for taking Ellen some place else.

  14. The author uses foreshadowing in the end of chapter 7 when it said " In the earlier times, she has always overheard laughter. Tonight there was no laughter at all.

    The House by the sea

the house and the meadows that surrounded it were so much a part of her childhood, a part of her life, that she did`t often look at them with fresh eyes.

  17. I think that when they say " what is the weather like for fishing." I think they are going to get on the boat and take Ellen to Sweeten.

  18. The star of David is a clue. I think it is something about the Nazis. I also think when the mom said is the weather good for fishing is a clue too. I think it was a secret code of taking Ellen somewhere else that she has never been before in her hole intire life.

  19. I think that Ellen and Annemarie looking over at Sweden is a sign that the Uncle Henrick is going to take Ellen are going to Sweden to take Ellen to safety. I also think that Peter is going to bring Ellen's parents to Uncle Henrick so all of Ellen's family will stay together.

  20. Ellen cupped one hand over her eyes and looked across the water at the misty shoreline that was another country.

  22. I think the scene is when Annemarie and Ellen are looking across to Sweden and they see a dock. I think that they will take Ellen to Sweden.

  23. Ellen said her mother said the water is to tall and big and cold beacase they are in the north and i think Ellen's parent's are somewere in the north with Ellen.

  24. I think great aut bertie is not at all in there family at all. I think they moved the furniture to hide Ellen that would be better way of hiding her if they moved the furniture around .so it would just seem like a reguler funerel. Also it might be a fake funerel and while evryone is at the service and mourning the dead someone would take ellen to Sweden. And at Sweden it would be a safer place to hide jews because it is nutrel.

  25. Ellen kissed the kitten`s head and let it lead from her arms to the ground. it darted away and disappeared in the tall grass. they fowllowed mama into the house.

  26. I think that when the Star of David imprinted on Annemarie´s hand it was a hint. When mama said is the weather good for fishing I thought that she asked that in code which meant that MAYBE they were going to take Ellen to Switzerland and there she could meet her mama and papa and be free.

  27. I think that they are going to take ellen to sweden because it is a safer place for jews to hide away from the Naziś. they would just act like it is a regular funeral.

  28. Sweden was a clue. they will probably take Ellen to Sweden because it is nuetral

    1. also it says don't talk to anyone so they will probably get in trouble by talking to someone

  29. The foreshadow was the talk about if the weather is good for fishing. What they are saying is they are taking Ellen to Sweden where she would meet up with her parents without Annemarie knowing. If Annemarie knew about this plot she would try to go with them or find another way which would make the Nazi's have an advantage on finding Ellen and her family.

  31. I think that the Johansens and Uncle Henrik will leave to possibly go to Sweden. Clues are when Annemarie asks why the furniture has moved and Uncle Henrik gets the boat ready. I think this means that they are going to go someplace else to protect Ellen.

  32. Instead of making a big deal about the funeral

  33. I think saying is the weather good for fishing is a huge. I think it is surely a code for something like Is it a good time to take Ellen.

  34. I think that the author used foreshadowing in the part where mama explains to the girls that they can not talk to anyone- not even family- while they are around here. They had to stay away from people, too. Mama said that it would be too hard and dangerous to explain where Ellen is from and who she is. I think that the author did this to show that Annemarie and Ellen(possibly Kirsti as well,) will run into someone; even worse a German soldier.

  35. It tells you that something bad is going to happen. For example, the book tells you, usually, laughter was overheard, but this time, there was no laughter, which makes me wonder what was so bad. I also think it tells you a lot about Mrs. Johanson's past, which is kind of a weird way of foreshadowing. Knowing her past also lets us know some other things that will happen in the future. So, in conclusion, chapter 7 has a lot of foreshadowing elements in it.

  36. Annemarie says that there are two girls looking at denmark, so I think they are going to go to Sweden and be the two girls.

  37. I think they are foreshadowing when Annemarie showed Ellen the sea for the first time, she pointed out Sweden. They say maybe two girls their age are looking over at them saying, "That's Denmark." I think they are foreshadowing that they will be the two girls over there, and Uncle Hendrik will take Ellen and Annemarie over to Sweden to protect them.

  38. The example of foreswadowing in chapter 7 is that Uncle Henrik thought that the following day would be good for fishing which meant that he would ship her on his boat to her freedom and at the time Sweeden was neutral and was not occupied by the Nazis.

  39. I think naming the cat Thor might be foreshadowing. Or when they are by the sea and Annemarie said to Ellen that's Sweden then she said their could be two girls on Sweden saying that's Denmark.

  40. At the end of Chapter 7, the author said that there was no laughing that night. And then, in Chapter 8, Great-aunt Birte is dead, but Annemarie said that she doesn't even exist. If 'Great-aunt Birte' never existed, and she was 'dead', maybe that has to do with foreshadowing, and something bad will truly happen later. Also, still in Chapter 8, the girls look to see Sweden, and maybe that means that Ellen will go to Sweden to hide.

  41. Let's review the following to see what might be coming up:

    - Mrs. Johanson wasn't with the girls for AT LEAST five minutes when they were thinking about Sweden. Where was she?

    - Mrs. Johanson said not to talk to anyone. I would think that they would already know that, which makes me suspicious. She also said,"Even if they're Uncle Hendrik's friend."

    - Who is Great Aunt Birte???

These have lead me to believe that the person who is Great Aunt Birte is:

    - Peter
    - Mrs. Rosen
    - Mr. Rosen
    - The REAL Mrs. Johanson

  42. I think that Annemarie and Ellen are going to be like those girls they said when they were looking out to Sweden and the next day in the morning they are going to be taken to Sweden so Ellen can be more safe from the Nazis since Sweden wasn't occupied by Nazis.

  43. When she said is the wether good for fishing she ment can we come over and when he said only one he ment only one Jew.

  44. The author was foreshadowing by having Henrik say "It will be good weather for fishing." He is saying that he will take Ellen to Sweden on his boat and stay from morning to night. Instead of saying it directly to Ellen he said it the way he did so Ellen wouldn't be scared or nervous.

  45. I think that Uncle Hendrik will take Ellen to Sweden. When Mrs. Johansen moved the furniture, I think it was connected to when Uncle Hendrik was getting his boat ready. his most likely means that they are going to take Ellen to Sweden.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Maybe Hendrik is taking Ellen to somewhere safe and Annemarie, Kirstie, and their his sister Annemarie's mother. I think their going to Swenden because it is close to them and isn't taking over my the Nazi's.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Uncle Hendrik is most likely to take Ellen, Annemarie, Kirsti, and Mrs. Johansen somewhere safe and a place where there are no Nazi's looking for Ellen. The closet place with no Nazi's and close to Denmark which is Sweden. At the end of chapter 8 Mrs. Johansen said that Uncle Hendrik was getting the boat ready and that they are going to get up very early.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think Uncle Hendrick is going to take Annemarie and Ellen to Sweden. Also, when Mama said" Is it good for fishing" I think she was asking if it was good boating weather to take Ellen over to Sweden. I think they would be taking Ellen to Sweden because it was not taken over by the Nazi.

  49. If a leaf can float all the way over from Sweden to wherever they're at, we can do it too.
