Number the Stars (Chapters 9-10)

1. Do you believe Uncle Henrik?  Do you think Annemarie was safer not knowing the truth?

2. Do you think this general idea is true?  That children are safer not knowing the truth about the dangers that surround them?  One example would be when Mrs. Johansen didn't tell Kirsti the truth about the "fireworks" on the night of her birthday.  By misleading Kirsti to believe that the explosions from the Navy ships were actually fireworks for her birthday, Mrs. Johansen gave Kirsti the chance to fall asleep peacefully and not stress or worry about the truth of what was happening.

3. What examples from this story, or other stories/movies can you share that defend the idea that it is sometimes better for children to not know the truth of a dangerous situation.

  2. 1. I believe Uncle Henrik is right because if she would know that is the truth then she could be in danger keeping the seceret and knowing the seceret.

  3. I don´t believe Uncle Henrik and I think that not telling the truth can harm someone or something.

  6. I don´t think it is best to keep secrets because when the danger comes you won´t know what to do.

  7. 1 I think it was safer of Annemarie not knowing but she still was brave and persevered. If she would have not been smart enough to answer the normal answer that her great Aunt Birte died their family could have been in serious danger.

    ReplyDelete
  8. No because if they would have known the dangers they would know why, what to do and what not to do. Just like when Kirsty talked back to the soldiers on the street.

    1. good thinking... I would consider thinking about the danger she would be in to know a secret that could hurt her.

  9. Yes because if she knew it could put her in danger.

  10. 2.I do believe that you shouldn't let kids know the truth but I also don't. When kids are at a younger age they don't always need to know the truth. When they get older though I think you should maybe consider telling the truth because that is how everyone learns new ideas and things.

  11. I think Annemarie would be safer knowing the truth because she would eventually find out the truth so why hide it. I think that this general idea is not true because why say a lie then finaly break it to them when they beileved it their whole life? In "Big Nate Blasts Off", his father tells him that they might have to move to California because of his job. Nate felt devistated and was down the whole day until his dad pulled up in a car as he was practicing for ultimate frisbee and told him that he got a job here.

  12. I do believe Uncle Hendric. I think it is safer not knowing the truth because if someone forces you to tell the truth and you do not know the real truth and you tell a lie then you would be safe. I also believe that if something was going wrong and the parents are telling a lie but the lie makes you not stress I agree with that.

  13. 2 I think it is safer for them to not know the truth because if it was like something big and someone could die than they don't want the children getting all worked up and worried about what is happening and begin to dream about worse things.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I do think Uncle Henrik is telling the truth. When Peter told Mr.Rosen about the important thing he needed to get to Henrik Peter didn't tell what the impotant thing was. Mr.Rosen never asked what was in the impotant thing. This is why everyone shouldn't know everything.

  15. I belive Uncle Henrik, and i also think it better for Annemarie to not know the truth. I belive the genarl idea is true. I also belive all children are safer without knowing the truth because the truth can be painful, scary, and disasterouis. In the Harry Potter seires Harry was not told he was a horcrox untile he needed to know so he could destory Lord Voldemort.

  16. 2 yes beause if something happens you dont know what to do

  17. I think Uncle Hendricks is Wright because if Anne Marie knows she might accidentally say what the secrete is.

  18. 1.I do believe Uncle Henrik.I think Annmarie is safer not knowing the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  19. no because they could be safer and no because they could have been more prepared

    ReplyDelete
  20. No I do not think that it is fair to Annemaire to not know the truth. If the children are young you do not have to tell them everything, but when they are older you should start telling them more of the truth and you should not lie to them when they are older. They also now know what to stay away from so that they do not get hurt. Some books and movies are Land of Stories because the kids never get hurt because the mom told the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  21. No I think she should know the truth because one time she would find out and she would probly be mad at them for not telling her.

I think it is better to know the truth because once they will find out and get mad.

  22. Maze runner because the people in the glade wouldn't tell Thomas what was outside in the maze.

  23. I think the general idea is true and that the truth can put you in danger.

  24. 1. No because she might have gotten scared without the truth because she might think another family member died, and it would haunt her memory.
2.Sometimes, because if Kirsti knew the truth, she would probably be terrified.
3.In Matilda, her dad did not say that she had an abusive principal because she really wanted to go to school.

  26. I believe that Annemarie is better knowing the truth because she does not have to go through the sad emotions.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think that Annemarie and Kristi are safer not knowing the trueth about everything because there could be dangers that Mama doesn't want them to know about.

    ReplyDelete
  28. yes she safer is safer not knowing because if a Nazi soldier walked up to Annemarie and says "why lots people hear." And if Annemarie did not know she would just say "My Great Aunt Birte funral." in a different voice then she what use if she was lying. One example is when Harry's aunt and uncle lied and said that his mother and father died in a car crash but really they said that so Harry would not go after LOrd Voldermont.

  29. Kids are better knowing the truth because they will feel better than they would if they didn't know.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1. I agree with Uncle Henrik about Annemarie being safer not knowing the truth. If a soldier had questioned her, then she could have easily answered that she did not know. She might have also told Ellen and put Ellen in danger too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. children are better not knowing about secrets because like Kirsti knowing Ellen was a jew could have gotten them in trouble if she said it was Ellens new year when they were riding the train to Henrik's

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1. I agree with Uncle Henrik about Annemarie being safer not knowing the truth. If a soldier had questioned her, then she could have easily answered that she did not know. She might have also told Ellen and put Ellen in danger too.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think it is best not knowing the truth of something so important to your life because if you do you will panic and start screeming

    ReplyDelete
  34. I believe him because Annemarie would not be as certain about telling the Nazi soldiers that her great-aunt Birte died because she would already know that she was not real.

    ReplyDelete
  35. yes because you will be more brave in hard times. This story is similar to joseph because it would be better for less people to know what there doing. If theres a fire it would be better to get out of the house and not know.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Annemarie is better not knowing the truth because if there was an emergency and Annemarie knew about it she would be very worried but if she did not know about the emergency she would be calm .

  37. If children do not know they are more likly to lison to what you want them to do.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think it is better knowing the truth because if you don´t you would be curios so you might investigate and get hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1 Annemarie was better not knowing because if she got really nervus then she might of not said the right thing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I believe that kids are better not knowing the truth because if Anne Marie knew that her parents and Peter were going to help Ellen´s family when the soldier stopped her at the street corner, her voice would be different and she might hesitate to tell the soldier which would look suspicius.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1. I think that Uncle Henrik is wrong. Kids deserve to know the truth if adults do.
    2. No, the idea is not true in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  42. NO i think it is right for you to tell you what is going to happen in your life because if you are going to die you will want to know

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1.I believe Uncle Henrick and think that Annemarie is better off not knowing the truth especialy when there are Nazi soldiers.

    1. 2. Yes because the reaction may be against you when they tell the truth.
      3. If a real tornado were to happen and the children knew then they would panic and not do their job properly. If they thought it was a drill they would be relaxed.

  44. #1. I believe Uncle Henrik. If Annmarie was not aware of the situation she might not be as worried for her friend as she might be now, knowing what she must do.

#2. I do believe it is true. For an example if a fire happened and you needed to get out of your house it is safer to not know there is a fire because you have less reason to worry. Also because if you knew it was a fire and you had to get out you might start panicking and running around trying to find your toys or your pet.

#3. I once watched the movie Shiloh about an endangered dog. And the little siblings did not know because it would make them sad to know the dog is in trouble

    ReplyDelete
  45. 1.Yes, I believe Uncle Henrik did the right thing. If Annemarie did know the truth, she could panic and worry. Uncle Henrik lied to Annemarie to keep her safe.

    2. Children need to know about the dangers that surround them. I believe this because when kids know, they face real life situations.

    1. 3. In the story, when Kirsti was talking to the soldiers, Annemarie or her mom did not tell her the soldiers were dangerous.

      Delete
  46. 1. I do think so because it would have been easier for Annemarie to respond to the Nazi soldier with the response her mother and uncle wanted her to have if she hadn't known the truth.
2.If i child knew something bad might happen to them they would be put in a state of panic. This is why sometimes it is good to keep a secret for others' safety. Also it may be easier for a child to respond to something.
    3. If a natural disaster were to happen the child would panic

    ReplyDelete
  47. 2. I think that it is okay for parents sometimes not to tell their children the truth. The parents should just tell their children the important things. If the children do not know the dangers of the world, they might think something is safe even if it is not. They should not know everything, though, because they may not be safe that way.

    ReplyDelete
  48. An example of this is that Mrs. and Mr. Byers didn't know that Joseph made a room in the cave.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I believe Uncle Henrik because if Annemarie knew, she would have a totaly different reaction to the questoins anyone asked. It is way safer for her. Jest like Kirsti. I believe that this idea is true and that it truly is safer if kids don't know the truth because like I said they would have a totaly different reaction if anyone asked them or if it acualy happened. One story is that Annemarie never knew about Peter, so it was safer for her not to know

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yes I do think Annemarie and Kirsti were safer not knowing the truth because if they had known the truth when the solder asked Annemarie if she knew what was in the casket than her responce would have been much different. Other examples could be if a kid was asked by a bugler if they knew were an object was then if they really didn't know where it was they would be much safer.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think it could be good for the older people but for the younger people people it could turn out bad just like in the train when Kirsti almost told about Ellen's New Year.

    ReplyDelete
  52. In Joseph he did not tell any one about the cave because if they found out they would think their hiding slaves.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Sometimes when a tornado is seen and you tell someone a lie. But when it hits them they will be happy instead of propared.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It is like Joseph because when Bails and scroggin enter the house and the soldiers enter the house.

    ReplyDelete
  55. part 2 of question 2

Also if you know the truth it can make you panic or frightened and you might tell it to someone your not supposed to.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 3 One example is when you see a bully that is coming toward your friend but u don´t tell them. Doing this could hurt your friend.

    ReplyDelete
  57. If children know they might not do it or will hesitate to do the job or task.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think that Uncle Henrik did the right thing not telling the girls other wise it would be hard for them to keep the secrete when they know.

    ReplyDelete
  59. #2 Its better because a child that knows may tell a child that doesn't know, which would not be good.

#3 A book, Poppy's Return, is about a mama mouse that doesn't tell her children the real reason why she is visiting her dad and cousins. She thinks that her children will want to follow and help if she shares with them that their grandpa's home may be destroyed soon by a plow. If they follow, they could get hurt or lost.
