Number the Stars (Chapters 5-6)

At the end of chapter 5, the author describes the Star of David being imprinted in Annemarie's palm.  What do you think the author is really telling the readers as she describes the impression of the star in Annemarie's palm?

  2. The star of David imprinted on her hand symbolized Ellen and it would go away after a little while like Ellen would eventually see her family again or leave some how.

  9. I think the author is meaning how tight she was holding the Star of David. Maybe in a couple of chapters the Nazis would see this imprint on Annemaries hand and send her to a jew camp.

  10. I think it shows us that annemarie likes Ellen that much and how scared she was that her best friend could be taken and she didn't want to loose another person in her life.

  20. I think the author really means that Annemarie will help the Rosen's, which are Jewish. Also, the Star of David is the symbol for the Jewish.

  21. I think the author described this because Annemarie was so scared and did not want the soldier to open her hand to see the star.

  22. I think the author may have been forshadowing. Maybe she had the star imprint because she may have to pretend to be Jewish to save her friend's life.

  23. I think Annemarie held the star or david so tightly because she did not Ellen to get caught. Now the impression is a symbol of their friendship.

  26. I believe that Annemarie the author got the imprint to show that she was so scared about the solders. I also believe she did that so she would take the blame, not Ellen.

  28. The star being pressed into her palm represents how strong Annemarie´s love for Ellen is. It shows how far she might have to go to save her Jewish friend. This shows that the journey ahead, might not be what she expects.

  29. I think that she was so nervous for Ellen that she clenched the necklace so hard it left an imprint. I also think that it was a clue to how for Annemarie would go to help her friend.

  30. It makes them in danger because a soldier could easily see the star of David and might think she is Jewish.

  31. If a soldier spots the imprint they will think she is Jew or they will think she is Ellen.

  35. I think that the she wanted to discribe how scared Annemarie was when the soldiers came. And how much she wanted to help her friend in this postion.

  36. It shows how later in the story Annemarie would give up so much to help save Ellen from the Nazi soldiers.

  37. I think the author added this to show how much Annmarie was afraid at that moment and how much she loved Ellen. I think this might also leave a clue to what will happen in the future to Annmarie and Ellen

  38. I think that Annemarie was so scared that she griped it so hard which lefted the imprint of the star.
