Number the Stars Chapters 3-4

1.  Where do you think Mrs. Hirsch has gone?  Support your response with evidence from the story.  What text to text comparison came to mind when you realized Mrs. Hirsch's shop was closed?

2.  Who is Peter Neilson and why did he visit the Johansens in the middle of the night?  Support your thoughts with evidence from the story or from other stories we've heard in the last week.

3.  Why did Ellen have to stay with the Johansens in chapter 4?  And why didn't her parents stay with her?  It seems odd that in scary times like these that the Rosens would separate from their daughter, Ellen.

4.  Chapter 3 should have reminded you of another story we read together.  What text to text comparison can you make?

  1. 1 I think Mrs. Hirsch has gone to hide somewhere because now the Jews are being hunted because Ellen had to hide as well because they were being hunted a text I can compare in to is the butterfly where they candy shop owner monsiuer Marks get taken by that Nazi soldiers

Chapter 3 is like the Butter Fly because the German soldiers took the owner of the button store like they did to the owner of the candy store in the Butter Fly.

  9. Peter is Annemarie's sisters supposed to be husband who is helping ellen's parents hide from the Nazi soldiers. He visted the johansens in the middle of the night to tell Annemarie and her family what is happening and stuff that no one is suppoesed to know because he is visting in the dark of night almost secert.

  11. 1. I think that Mrs. Hirsch has been taken away by the Nazis. I know this because Mrs. Hirsch is Jewish and the Nazis are closing shops owned by Jews. I realized that in the story, "The Butterfly" the candy store owner got taken away by the Nazis.

    2. Peter Neilson was engaged to Annemarie's dead sister, Lise. Peter still stops by the Johansens apartment every once in a while. Peter went to their house in the middle of the night for two reasons. One, he dropped off seashells for Annemarie and Kirsti and two bottles of beer for Mama and Papa.

3.Ellen stayed with the Johansens because she was hiding from Nazi soldiers after they heard about what they did to Jews. Ellen was the only one to stay their because the Johansens could only hide 1 person.

    4. I believe that a good text comparison is "The Butterfly" because they both tell a story about a modern family hiding and protecting Jews from the Nazis.

  12. I think Mrs. Hirsch is hiding from Germans. Peter was Lise's fiance. Ellen would have been relocated. The Johansens didn't have space for Ellen's parents. It reminds me of The Butterfly story because Ellen and her family had to hide and monique had to hide a family with her.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 3 Ellen had to stay with the johansens because the Nazi soliders were looking for the Jewish and Ellen's family was Jewish so Ellen had to stay in Annemarie's house. Ellen had to split up with her parents because if Ellen was just there Ellen and Annemarie could pretend they were sisters, but if they hid the whole family it would look like were hiding Jewish residents.

  14. I think Mrs. Hirsch has gone on a vacation because Mrs. Hirsch is a jew and she could of went to a meeting or a confederacy.

  16. 1. I think that the Nazi Soldiers took Mrs. Kirsch where all the other Jews are because she had the Nazi symble on her door

    2. Peter came to tell them about the Nazi and how they made a list of all people that are Jewish and to tell them about what was happening.

    3. Ellan had a live with them because the Nazi had a list of Jews and where they lived. Her parents couldn't stay because three people would be odvious if soilders came into a house with 7 people. SO her parents had to go with Peter to keep Ellen safe.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1) I think that the Nazi took her and her family because they were Jewish.
2)I think Peter Nelson is a Dane who is their army. He came at because it is way more private and secretive at night than in the day.
3)Ellen is Jew so is her parents. Her family heard that the German soldiers were coming for all of the Jewish people in Her city. They broke apart because it was easier to hide only one person than three people. But, they would be reunited in the end.
4)It reminded me of the butterfly book because the candy shop owner got taken away by the Nazi soldiers because he was Jewish. Mrs.Hirsch most likely got her shop taken away because she was Jewish. That was the Nazi soldiers first bad thing that would happen to the Jewish people.

  18. I think Mrs.Hirsch was taken by the Nazi to a relocation Camp. I also think Peter is in the Denmark army. Peter is helping Ellen's parents because the Nazi are coming for them. The Johansens are helping Ellen and not her parents because they can't help all three people. Chapter three reminded me of the butterfly when the candy shop owner got beet up and taken away.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 4 Chapter 3 reminded me of the butterfly because the store ownner was gone the family is splitting up Nazi solilders are coming in the dead of night and taking Jewish people and every one is trying to hide the jews and help them.

  20. Peter visited the Johansons so he can give Annemarie and Kirsty each a seashell. And he also gave the parents some beer.
Ellen had to stay with the Johansons because her parents were going to visit a friend(relocation camp).

I think that the Germans took Mrs. Hirsch because she might be a jew. In the story it said that all the people that attended a synogoaga gave the Germans information on were they lived and what there name is. In my opinion the German Soldiers kidnapped Mrs. Hirsch and put her in a geto.

  26. Peter Nelson is a kid or a teenanger because the mom and dad said that ¨Peter was like a son to us¨.Peter visited them in the middle of the night because he has not seen them in a while.

  27. 1. I think that Mrs. Hirsch went to a German hostage or a place where Germans would keep Jews and take down their business. I believe this because usually Jewish people's businessess get lost and don't come back again till the soldiers leave. When I realized Mrs. Hirsch's shop is closed it reminded me of the butterfly book. The candy man was sent away while his shop was closed.

    2. Peter Neilson is Annmarie's older sister's ( Lisa who is dead) fiance`. Even though Peter's almost wife died he still came to Annmarie's house to visit. Peter came in the middle of the night to talk to Annmarie and her parents. He wanted to talk about what the Germans are doing to the Jews.He wanted them to be aware since the Johansens know some Jews. Peter had to be very brave and sneaky because if you are a person living in Germany you cannot leave your property at the latest of 8:00.

    3. Ellen had to stay with the Johansens. She had to because all Jews had to report to the Germans to be arrested or who knows what. Ellen stayed with Annmarie so she wouldn't get caught. Her parents didn't go with her because they wanted to save her daughter and not leave clues around since they live in the same apartment. Annmarie's parents didn't take Ellen's whole family because they couldn't hide 3 people in the house. So, they decided to just let Ellen stay with them and let Peter take Ellen's parents to a safer and more secure place. Yes it does seem very scary for her parents to leave Ellen but it was the right thing to do to save their little girl.

    4. Chapter 3 reminds me of the book The butterfly. It reminds me of the book because in the Butterfly the candy man gets taken away and his shoppe gets closed because he was a Jew. The same thing happened to Mrs. Hirsch when her shoppe was closed and she was mysteriacly gone. The same thing probably happened.

  28. 1. I think that the Germans toke Mrs. Hirsch and her family to one of the camps full of Jews because the Nazis dislike the Jews and because they are also after Ellen's family because they are Jews.
    2. Peter Neilson is the person that was going to marry Lise. I think that Peter helps Jews hide from the Nazis for 2 reasons: First of all, he says his job takes him all over the place. Second, Annemarie's father said to Ellen and Annemarie that Peter is helping Ellen's parents.
    3. Ellen isn't with her parents because the Nazis are hunting her family since they are Jews and Annemarie's family can't hide all three of them.
    4. Chapter 3 reminded me of the butterfly story because in both stories a Jewish shop keeper is taken by the Nazis.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think Mrs.Hirsch went to hide because she is a Jew and she does not want to get taken.

2.I think Peter Nelson wants to help Mrs.Hirsch and take her to a hidding place

3.I think Ellen is staying with the Johnsons because her parents were took to hide

4.Chapter 3 and 4 remind me of the story the butterfly.

  30. 1.I think Mrs. Hirsch was taken by the Nazis to a relocation camp because of here Jewish nationality. I thought of the candy shop owner in butterfly getting taken by the Nazis.

    2. I think Peter Nelson is a resistance fighter and he came to warn the Johansens of the Nazis.

    3. Ellen had to stay with the Johansens because of Nazis that were supposted to invade the condo they lived in. Ellen`s parents did not stay with her because of how hard it is to hide 3 people.

    4. Chapter 3 reminded me of butterfly with Mrs. Hirsch`s shop being closed and her being missing.

Ellen had to stay over at Annemarie's house because Ellen's family wanted to help hide a hunted Jewish person but if they hid the whole family then the German Soldiers would look in all the closet apartments to find the missing jew. Annemarie's family only hid Ellen because they can pretend there sisters.

  35. The dollar is way more because One kroner is 15 cents and an American Dollar is 100 cents

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1. I think the Nazis took her because in the story it said the Nazis were coming after Jues and because it also said that the Nazis were closing any business owned by a Jue. 2. Peter was someone who was going to get married to Annemarrie´s sister and he comes in the middle of the night to talk about how to help the Jues. He also comes in the middle of the night so the Nazi soldiers will not hear about it. 3.Ellen stayed at Annemaries house because the Nazis were going too started hunting down Jues and Ellen had pretend like she was a sister so she would not get taken away. Her parents did not stay with her because then it would be to obvious for the Nazis.

    ReplyDelete
  37. L think she went to the prison because on her window of her store there were words spelled in german earlyer in the story they would throw rocks at the shops and then they would put posters with german words on them.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 1. I think that Mrs.Hirsch's shop was destroyed by the Nazis. In the story, Annemarie tells her mother that a swastika was left behind. We learned that where ever the Nazis go they leave a swastika behind. When the author is explaining about the Hirsch family, they say that the son has dark hair. Lot's of Jews have dark hair.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1 I think the Nazi took Mrs. Hirsch because their store had a German sign and a swastika on it which normally meant it was ruined by Nazi.
2 I think Peter is a secret Nazi spy and is taking Mr. and Mrs. Rosen to sweeden.
3 Ellen stay with the Annemarie because she was hiding from the Nazis but All three of them there would have looked like two families.
4 This book reminds me of the Butterfly because families got split up on the run from the Nazis in both stories.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 1 I think the nazi soldiers broke into there store and arrested or took the jews. The sighn had a swastica
2 Peter might be with a resistance because he hides jews and he goes all over the place
3 The Nazis got a list of the jews and were going to take them away so there hiding them.
4 Its like the butterfly because mrs hirch and MR mosuner marks were taken away from there stores

  41. 1. They are at home trying to stay alive because their business closed.

    2. Peter Neilson was supposed to marry Lise, their daughter, and he came to say that Jewish businesses were being closed.

    3. Ellen needed to be safe. Her parents would make it obvious that they were there and they were Jewish.

    4. Joseph because it had many clues about how the story was going to end, and so did Joseph.

  42. peter is a boy who wanted to marrie annemarie's sister and then she died in a acssedent and then he could not marrie her. He came because he wanted to see annemarie to give her a present and her parents a beer to as a present.

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1. I think Mrs. Hirsh was taken away, maybe to a relocation camp, because she was a Jew and the Nazis would close down any business owned or ran by a Jew. Also, the sign was in German.
    2. Peter might be a resistance fighter and he probably came in the middle of the night to discuss how to hide Ellen and her parents.
    3. Ellen had to be separated from her parents so they wouldn't look suspicious to the Nazi soldiers.
    4. This chapter relates to 'The Butterfly.' Mrs. Hirsh was probably taken away just like Monsieur Marks.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 1. I think Mrs.Hirsch is a Jew and had to leave and find a safe hiding space. She probably knew that the Nazi's were coming. The sign probably said Jew owned store as I read in other books. This part of the story reminded me of when the candy shop closed because the owner was a Jew.

    2. Peter is helping Ellen's Parents run away. Peter is probably apart of something like the French underground but in Denmark. Peter probably visited them one, He wanted to clear things up for Annmarie and two to listen to the parents or tell them about the plan for the Rosen family.

    3. She probably stayed with the Johansens because it would be to dangerous to hide a whole family in the house but Ellen could act as a sister. In the Butterfly Sevrine's parents dressed up as a nun and priest to try and blend in while Sevrine went with Monique. Ellen's parents probably did the same.

4.I think chapter 3 is like the Butterfly. They are the same because the children in both have to step up and help and two because a Jewish store has been closed

    ReplyDelete
  45. 1. I think Mrs.Hirsh and her family have been taken by the Nazi soldiers. The Hirsh family is most likely Jewish because I heard evedence when there was a German sign with a swastika on. When this happened the story the Butterfly story came to mind because of when the candy shop owner was taken.
    2. Peter is the man who was about to marry Lise before she pasted. Peter is most likely a spy for Denmark that spies on the Nazis. Thanks to this job it allowed him to him the Jews and the Rosen family much easier.

  46. 2. I don't think Peter is as nice as he seems. I think he may have done something to hurt Annemarie's sister before the wedding. He could also be a Nazi spy.I also think it could be the apposite. Peter could also be part of the French Resistance. That might be why he is traveling so much.

  47. 1. I think that the Nazi´s took Mrs. Hirsch because she is a Jewish and the Nazi are hunting Jews

    2. I think that Peter is a resistance fighter and was trying to warn the Johansens about the Nazi´s. I also think that he came in the middle of the night because it is less likely that the soilders would see him and question him.

    3. Ellen had to stay at Annemarie´s house because she and her family are Jewish and the Naziś got a list of all the Jewish people. Ellens parents go with Peter because if the Nazi´s happen to come to their house and question them, it is easy to just say we have 3 kids.

    4. Chapter 4 reminded me of the butterfly because Mrs. Hirsch was not at her shop kind of like Miseir Marks from the butterfly.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ellen wanted to know what happened to Mrs. Hirsich so she asked the johnsons and her parents said you do not want to know

    ReplyDelete
  49. 1. I think the Nazi took them because they left there symbol, the swastika , and the letters were in German which ment the Nazi wrote it.Mrs. Hirsch and her family were jewish so that ment that the German could easily take them away.
    2. Peter was going to marry Lise but sadly , Lise died in a car accident. Peter visited them because he has not seen them in a long time and would like to warn them about the Nazi.
    3. The reason why Ellen had to stay with them was because Ellen was Jewish and when she was at the Jewish church the German were taking away Danish Jewish people so they had to hide Ellen. They did not have enough room for Ellen's parents so they went to Peter's house to try not to be seen.

    ReplyDelete
  50. 1 The Germans might have taken her but since the sigh was in German and it had a swastika on it she had to be Jewish.

2 Since he is a mail boy Peter is busy and trying to hide from the soldiers.

3 Ellen had to stay with them because then they could just take there whole family. And it would be easier for Ellen to get away.

4 Another book that I thought of was the Butterfly because they had to seperate the girl from her parents to get away from the soldiers.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think Mrs. Hirsch was taken away by the Nazi soilders. She was taken away to a camp. I relate this to the soilders taking away any jews. Peter Nelson was going to marry Lise but then she dided. He viseted them because he wanted to warn themn about whats coming next.

    ReplyDelete
  52. 3. Ellen had to stay with the Johnsons because the Nazis had discovered where here family lived and she needed to be safe. As a result she stayed with Annemarie and her family while her family was being taken away to another safe place. Annemarie and Ellen had to pretend to be sisters to keep safe.
    4. Chapter 3 reminded me of the Butterfly for multiple reasons. One reason was because Mrs.Hrisch was taken away from her shop just like the candy shop owner in the Butterfly. Another other reason is because Ellen had to be taken away from her family to be kept safe. The last reason is because both girls that were taken away from their family were Jewish.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think Mrs Hirsch was taken by the Nazi soldiers. Maybey she was taken away to their camp. Peter came over and told everyone what was happening to all jew owned stores.
