Number the Stars (Chapters 5-6)

Mr. Johansen calls Uncle Henrik in the middle of the night and asks him if the weather is good for fishing. It seems odd to call someone in the middle of the night, right after your home has been invaded by soldiers, to ask if the weather was good for fishing.  Was Mr. Johansen really wondering about the fishing conditions?  Or was there a different meaning behind his words?

  22. Is the weather good for fishing was code. It meant that Mrs.Johansen wanted to know if it was a good time to bring Ellen down. Is the weather good, could also mean are their no soldiers? They brought Ellen down there to keep her safe.

  25. I think that when he asked if the weather is good for fishing, it was code words, like on the Underground Railroad. He was really asking if it was safe to come over. Annemarie´s papa also talked about cigarettes, he really was talking about Jews.

  26. I think it was a code that they had planned in case of an emergency. They actually meant that the soldiers had came to look and they needed somewhere else to go.

  27. I think he was asking if the path was clear. The reason he asked that way was because phones used to all connect and a soldier could find out.

  28. He was not wondering if he could fish or not. It was code for "Can you keep Ellen safe in your house? Because if we keep her, the soldiers will be suspicious that we are not working."

  29. I think it was a code because if he did say the actual meaning the girls would become suspicious.

  30. I think the phrase was a code for if we could come to talk to you. Also it was asking if it was safe. When Annemarie's papa was talking about cigerets, he was taking about how Ellen was a jew and we are here to talk to you about her and the other jews because we are having a problem about it.

  33. There was words behind the words because if he asks that question and he says yes they think that the coast is clear for them to come to his house.
