Number the Stars (Chapters 13-14)

When Mrs. Johansen realizes what Annemarie found on the ground she says, "It may have all been for nothing."  What is so special about the packet?  What do you think is in it and why is it so important for Uncle Henrik to have?

(Hint: You read something on the blog in the last week that could lead you to the right answer.)

  1. I think the packet might be contaning ways for the Rosens and everybody else to safety in Sweeden, or it possibly could show the places where people lived who helped jews, like people on the underground railroad did. The packet could lead them to the houses, to get the jews really far away from the border of Sweeden. I think that is why Uncle Henrik needs the packet.

    3. Maybe Nazis are at sea to stop boats and the packet says where to go. at least, thats what i think

  3. I think that inside the packet is a special note that contained evidence of where Nazis might be. Or it might be a escape slip for all the people on board the fishing boat going to Sweden where all the Jew passengers will be safe.

    1. What do you mean by " an escape slip" ?

    2. I mean like train tickets to leave the Sweden harbor when the boat arrives at the harbor.

    3. I think he means visas.

    4. That makes more sense.

    5. Wow. Never thought about that.

  4. I think that the packet may have contained information about the Nazi's next move. I think so because, as Mr. Wilhelmy said, the article talks about G.F Duckwitz and how he leaked info to the Jewish Danes. It could also be fake permission of travel, like a fake passport or something.

    1. Actually, something isn't a good word. I meant, it could be a fake passport, or maybe, some train tickets.

  5. I think it is a map of where safe places are for Jews to hide.People on the underground railroad would make maps and give them to conductors so they know where to send the slaves to. Uncle Henrik needs the packet because he needs to know where to send the people they are helping. If they do not have the packet they may never get to safety.

    1. Why else do you think that a map might be important?

  6. I think it may be a train ticket or a map to get out of the general area of the nazi soldiers which if they do not have they will be caught. It may even be money to use in sweden and without the money they would not be able to buy clothes, food or water.

  7. I am not sure what it is but I know it is important. I think it might be meat because in the next chapter the the chapter is called my dog smells meat. It also might be a gun to protect everyone on the boat

    1. I think it may be something else. If you could, you might want to go back and read the article and think of something else it may contain.

  8. I think there is a map of Sweden in the packet. The map would have marked areas which would would be the houses of people that help and support Jews. It's important for Henrik to have it so he can guide refugees to the houses, and not protect them all the time so he can go back to Denmark where he lives.

  9. Mayby it is a map of where to find safty and where to go if somthing goes wrong so if they forgot that is not good at all.

  10. I remember reading something about powdered rabbits blood and cocaine. The mixture would distribute the dogs sense of smell preventing them from finding. I think that's in the packet and it is important because it hid the jews.

    1. It prevented them from finding the Jews

  11. I think the packet contains Ellen's "Star of David necklace. I know Annemarie claims she put it in a safe place, but maybe Peter found it in a dangerous spot and needed Uncle Henrik to dispose of or hide it properly. Another possibility is that Ellen really wanted the necklace and wouldn't leave without it because it is special to her. In that case, Uncle Henrik would keep it until they traveled safely to Sweden and give it to Ellen. It could also be maps or safe hiding spot locations to hide the Jews during the escape. It would allow Henrik to get the Jews there safely.

  12. I think that it was food and Uncle Henrik needed food because he could not be back for days and if he caught fish then he would have to eat them raw and that could do something like make him sick. I think she said "It may have all been for nothing" because they might not eat for days on the boat and maybe starve. If the baby "Rachel" wakes up they will need to feed the baby more drugs/sleeping pills that could maybe hunger the baby and if they run out of the drugs/sleeping pills the baby might starve and if they get food they will have to give it to the baby not them.

  13. I think it might either be visas, or it might be Henrik's subscription pills.
I think it's visas because last week we read the story that takes place in Lithiwania with Sugihara, and you can't enter any other countries without a visa which would ruin the plan for them to escape. The second idea is because Henrik might be allergic to something in the sea or like has a disease that he needs the pills to temparily stop the disease.

    1. What do you mean by "Subscription Pills"?

      Delete
    2. By that I mean like what the doctors give for you to take on a daily basis.

      Delete
  14. I think there might be weapons or even bombs. I think this because Peter helps Jews and he might need weapons to stop German trains carrying supplies and tanks for German soldiers and dogs are sometimes trained to find gunpowder. The packet might also contian a map of Sweden and were the Ronsens can hide possibly and were help can be found.

    1. I also think there might be food, water, money and more sleeping pills for the baby because they might not have food when they get to Sweden or any money and they might need money.

      Delete
    2. I don't think so because wouldn't bombs and guns be way to big for a packet to carry. And besides, if they did have bombs wouldn't that be a huge hazard and if the dogs were supposed to sniff it wouldn't that mean they would be caught?

  15. I think in the packet is tells you were the Nazies are or were to go if there is trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  16. i think that there is cocaine and rabbit's blood in the packet. The rabbit's blood would attract the Nazi dogs to the boat and then the cocaine would disable the dog's smell sense for a while, and then they wouldn't find the Jews that were in the boat. I think it is very important for Uncle Henrik to have the packet, especially if it has cocaine and rabbit's blood in it.

  17. for question 1 it was the packet that peter had given to Mr. Rosen he tripped on the step so it fell out of his pocket. It is special because peter said it was his important packet.i think what is in it that there where weapons because they where in a boat so the soldiers might attack them and so they can deffend them self's

    ReplyDelete
  18. The packet might be special because it has food, at my best guess, because there was no food in the coffin, and annemarie is bringing food, so it might be something like a meat, or coffee, because in order for the dogs to find her, she needs a strong smelling thing, and to be stopped by the nazis, it has to be something very important.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think the packet is something they need something like a passport so they can go to the next country, so they can go escape to someplace like Sweden where they can't be harmed.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think that it is a secret message from the Danish Resistance. The message may have been saying what time would be the best time for escaping or possibly where the Nazis are at what time if the Nazis have been patrolling the sea. If it is one of these 2 ideas then the reason it's so important is that if Uncle Henrik doesn't get the package then he could get caught by the Nazis.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think there were more of the sleeping drugs that Peter gave to Rachel, the baby. I thought this when I saw Mr. Wilhemy's "hint" to the answer. The packet was probably very important. If she woke up, she might cry, giving everyone away.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It could also contain the Star Of David necklace, and Uncle Hendrik needs to get rid of it, or hide it in a very safe place.

      Delete
  22. I think it could be money for the trip across the sea or it could be the mixture of rabbits blood and a powder to remove the sent of the Jews who were trying to escape on Henrik's boat.

  23. These are my two ideas of what is in the packet

    (1) I think that the package contains places in Sweden are free and do not even have 1 soldier neat there to get them and then lock them away.
    (2) I also think a map of Copenhagon where Jewish refugees are and so Annemarie's Uncle Henrik so he could take them to those secret places under the ground so they the Rosens would not get caught and they would not get locked up

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think it might be places where the Nazis are or places where people are helping Jews. I also think it could be a place where they could go to when they get there.

  25. I think it may be a train ticket or a map to get out of the general area of the nazi soldiers which if they do not have they will be caught. It may even be money to use in sweden and without the money they would not be able to buy clothes, food or water.

  26. I think the packet contains information about:
    1.people and places to avoid.
    2.where to doc ship.
    3.when more Jews will come.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think that it may contain a map for Jews to hide in Sweden because the Nazis found out about the "sewing club", so they need to hide somewhere were they wouldn't be found. It could've been more sleeping drugs also.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think that the packet contains some sort of powder that can disable a dog's smell and I think that the packet has a scent of meat to it because I read the next chapter title and it said something like " my dogs smell meat". Dogs like meat so they would be attracted to the powder and they would lose their scent. When Mrs. Johansen said that it could've all been for nothing, I thought of that because without the dogs' sense of smell, the Nazi soldiers wouldn't be able to find the Jews. If they lose their dogs' sense of smell, the Nazi soldiers are extremely vulnerable when it comes to finding Jewish refugees anywhere, even air, land, or sea.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think it is a vista (passport) because to travel all over the world you need a vista. so maybe the vista had some sort of meat or powder or something on it.

  30. What I think it is is the yellow star of David because we read about it last week and it says small packet so that leads me to think that what else have we read about last week that is small and worth getting upset about so its probbaly the yellow star of David.

  34. I think it could be like Ethan said rabbit blood so it would confuse the guard dogs or it could be ellen's neclace of the star of david

  35. I think that there is a form to let theme get into Seweadin because it is so so so inportent that it sounds like that a person life depends on it and so that if the Nazis catch theme they will not be killed or arrested.

  37. Here are 2 things I believe are in the packet: Maybe some sort of tissue, or handkerchief, like Ethan said, with rabbits blood and some sort of chemical, that can block out one of the Nazis' dog's scents of smell. One reason I believe this is because in an article I read, (or, at least that's what I think I got it from), said that back then, resistance fighters that saved Jews, would soak rabbits blood or some chemical on something to block out a dogs' smell. They used this to block Jewish scents. That is one thing I think is in the packet. The second thing is maybe some maps of where Jews are safe and free from the Nazis. This makes sense because the Jews are going to Sweden with Uncle Henrik, but if they get caught, in Sweden or on the water, they could turn North, South, East or West to go to another place that is free from the Nazis. I think it would be this because, as said before, if the Jews were caught sailing, or scented by the Nazis' dogs, they would be able to turn back, or go somewhere else safe for them, with the help of the map. That is what I think makes sense of what is in the packet, because of the reasons I put with my response. -Lily Rizi

  38. In the packet i think their is meat soaked in rabbits blood to confuse the Nazi tracking dogs away from the jews hiding in Uncle Henrik boat.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think it is ether a map of the lake so they know how to get there. Or it could be rabbit blood so the search dogs cant find them.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think there could be passports and or something to hide the sent of the people escaping with Ellen and her family. Though if they didn't have passports and they found them what would they do.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1. Mrs. Johansen said it is all for nothing because she probably knows what was in there and why it was so important. I think the packet contains addresses of people who work with a group that help all Jews. And the packet has the peoples name and info about them. Or it has all the secret routes that lead to safety.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think that there could be rabbits blood in the packet. I think this because during the Civil war, we learned that slaves used rabbits blood to confuse the slave catchers dogs. I also think that if my other theory is wrong that there might be visas in the packet so that the Jewish refugees can stay in Sweden and it won't be illegal.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Or instead of rabbits blood maybe it was salt. We also learned that slaves used that too

  43. It might be a map for Uncle Henrik so that he could get to Sweden.

  44. Mabey there would be blood of a animal on the handkerchief . So when the dogs try to find them it would be hard.

    ReplyDelete
  45. In the packet I think there is the Rabbit blood in it because it would attrack the dogs and then the dogs would lose their scent. The dogs would not be attracked to the to Jews.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think that it has some thing to do with rabbits blood or a powder to trick a dog. I think this is the answer because I found out that could be a way people helped Jews escape.

  47. it would of been a desaster for all of them becuse it mite be for there ascape.

  48. They have to have it because it might have a safe map rought to Sweeden.

  49. I think that there could be viza's in the box because if they want to get to the heart of Sweden in the fastest amount of time they have to take a train.

  50. I think there are visas in the packet so uncle hedrik can cross them to sweden
