Annemarie is so upset because she even studied all her Great Aunts and Uncles and cousins and everyone. But it seems so suspicious to her that she has no idea who this Great Aunt Birte is. I think she is upset becuase anyone is upset when someone they love dies and I think Great Aunt Birte was a resitence fighter for the Danish resistence and I think she died on the battle field fighting for Denmark.

There could have been an Aunt Birte but since Annemaire did not know who she was I think she is not real. But how Uncle Henrick and Mr. Johansen were talking about cigrettes and in Show Way they made quilts I think it is code, but what really stumps me is what is the code for? I am very exited to find out what it means and what happens next.

It makes sense that it is a code because of Annemarie's research, and back then the resitance fighters always used codes. Such as Mr. Johansen asking Uncle Henrik if the weather was good for fishing in the middle of the night. It may seem sad, but I beleieve that Great Grannie Birte is.. a lie. In conclusion, that is why Annemarie didn't know about Great Aunt Birte.
I believe that it was a trick for the Nazi's to think they had an aunt birte but it was probubly code for Ellen. If the people who had been helping Jews did not know code that could mean prison, that is a reason why they use code. So that is why they made a code name for Ellen, so they could her, her family and the Johansons safe.
